Neighborhood Electric Vehicles

Neighborhood Electric Vehicles, or NEVs, are small electrically-powered vehicles which have top speeds between 20-25 mph, and may not be driven on highways, freeways, or roads with posted speed limits greater than 35 mph. NEVs are sometimes referred to as Low Speed Vehicles.

Because of their low speed, NEVs are not subject to the same Department Of Transportation crash and safety requirements that freeway-capable cars are, so they can be much less expensive to build than a DOT safety-certified freeway-capable car. NEVs must comply with the Federal FMVSS500 safety standards that do require a certain amount of safety equipment to be street legal, though, including headlights, turnsignals, windshields, seat belts, rear-view mirrors, parking brakes, and the like. NEVs often appear similar to golf carts, although any golf cart with a top speed lower than 20mph is technically not classified as an NEV.

NEVs can provide an economical, emission-free alternative for short commutes, shopping, and other short distance trips that do not require freeway travel.

Learn More about NEVs:

The San Francisco Electric Vehicle Association promotes the use of electric vehicles of all types but it does not endorse any particular manufacturers, brands, dealers, or vehicles. The following information is provided to assist potential NEV buyers to learn more about the choices available.
