Conversions
Conversions are gasoline engine vehicles that have been converted to electric power. The gasoline engine and fuel tank are removed and an electric motor, controller, and batteries are installed. There are no companies in the immediate San Francisco area who do conversions, that we know of. Electro Automotive in Santa Cruz does conversions: http://www.electroauto.com/
See the Do It Yourself page for information on do-it-yourself conversions.
Other resources:
- Finnish Open Source project to distribute conversion information world wide. See http://www.sahkoautot.fi/eng (4/12/2008)
- VW bug conversions: SFEVA member Lawrence Rhodes will convert a Beetle to electric with a range of 15-20 miles for $3,500.
- E-mail Lawrence at primobassoon [at] sbcglobal [dot] net.
- The annual EV rally held by the Silicon Valley Electric Auto Association usually includes a weekend-long workshop on how to convert a gasoline car to electric. see http://www.eaasv.org for details.
